The following day, Theo could barely focus on his classes because of annoyance.

Who the hell kisses someone and just runs away after that? Are we in middle school or something? Okay, technically, Zack’s still a teenager and a whole eighteen months younger than me, but that’s not an excuse. He’s kinda antisocial and has spent most of his youth working, so let’s say he doesn’t have much experience in dealing with attraction. Besides that, the person he’s attracted to is the one he’d initially felt animosity toward and still has mixed feelings about. Looking at it from that perspective, things make more sense… But, still! I didn’t even get to respond, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do now.

“You okay?” Maya asked, from the seat next to Theo’s.

“I’ve just got something on my mind, that’s all.”

“Wanna share?”

“Not right now. More importantly, it feels like you’ve been itching to say something since this morning.”

“Well…I slept with Will,” Maya said, then made a pathos-filled pose, like the heroine in a melodrama, and added, “I know. I’m weak. Don’t judge me.”

“I’m not here to judge you or gatekeep your sex life. Anyway, you’ve at least partially met your goal of getting to know your crush before becoming highly attached or engaged with him, so good job on that.”

“Still, I faltered. I’ve discarded reason and determination in favor of carnal pleasures,” she said, posing like a nun praying for forgiveness.

“What’s with the overly dramatic delivery?”

“I’ve started seeing how Will can view drama as entertaining and beneficial,” Maya said, in her normal tone. “I think I’m the type who exacerbates issues inside her head, gets consumed by them, then explodes. But, if I give myself release like”—she went for a dramatic delivery again—“Woe is me! I’ll never build a trusting relationship with my partner because I can never tell if he’s serious or not.” Then she went back to her normal tone. “I start feeling more lighthearted about the issue at hand and I realize that I’ve been exaggerating it in my mind from the get-go, except that I was adding rational-sounding arguments to it instead of corny, dramatic delivery.”

“Interesting perspective…”

“Many of Will’s perspectives are interesting. Since I’ve started understanding them, I’d say I’d gotten to know him well enough before starting a relationship. We’ve had many talks, and I’ve also ended up learning things about myself. It turns out that I’m drawn to drama, and I play a big role in causing it, whether consciously or not. But in my past relationships, drama also came with toxicity, and I hated that. With Will, however, it’s safe and productive. Drama doesn’t just add spiciness, it also helps with communication. I’ve been feeling at peace since realizing I can express my dramatic side freely and that my boyfriend cares about my views within a…debate.”

“You’re gonna call such events ‘debates’ now?”

“That’s what they turn into in the end. Last night, after we kissed for the first time, I became hesitant and wanted to go home.
